National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day – Raising Awareness with a National Network, the New Normal

Today is Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. And so often the awareness of how HIV/AIDS impacts Black women falls between the cracks, but it is so real. Did you know that the CDC estimates that 230,000 women in the US have been diagnosed with HIV? Or that Black women have been disproportionately impacted? This doesn’t include the number of Black women who have not been tested and don’t know their status. While Black women represent 13 percent of the U.S. population, we represent 61 percent of women living with HIV in this country.
Our newest initiative, The New Network, The New Normal  is creating a national network of Black women’s and other organizations to address Black women and HIV. Together we will do this by strengthening community assets, delivering innovative solutions and making lasting impact on the health and wellness of Black women and other women of color.

Our steering committee includes:

National Black Women’s HIV AIDS Network – Barbara Joseph
WORLD – Cynthia Carey Grant
Balm In Gilead – Carey Goodman
NBLCA – C. Virginia Fields
Howard University – Dr. Goulda Downer
Independent Experts on HIV, Gender and PrEP
Valerie Rochester
Dr.Gail Wyatt
